Emily's Story

With 4,000 undergraduate students attending Biola, it’s not uncommon that at any given time a student will be experiencing illness and even death within his or her immediate family. For Emily, her father’s unexpected illness had her driving back and forth between campus and UCLA Medical Center for six weeks leading up to his passing. While no amount of money could ease the pain that Emily experienced during this time, assistance from the Parent Benevolent Fund to help pay for the gas she needed to get to and from the hospital lessened the financial burden she was incurring.

The Parent Benevolent Fund exists to provide compassionate assistance to students like Emily. Through the generous donations of parents and friends, undergraduate students in crisis can receive financial support for one-time needs. Your donation to the Parent Benevolent Fund is tax-deductible and can be made anytime. (Please note that gifts given to a specific student are not eligible for a tax-deduction and cannot be given through the Parent Benevolent Fund.)

Brian's Story

Brian lived with his single mother in a newly purchased house and commuted to Biola for classes. While at work, his mother suffered a heart attack and died. Brian was left with a house worth less than the value of its mortgage and no adult family to help him.

A gift from the benevolent fund provided food and other essentials for Brian, while his church and outside donors assisted him with housing and funeral expenses. With the support of the Christian community, Brian was able to complete his studies at Biola, go on to earn a masters degree, and is currently in a doctoral program to become a psychologist.

Ivan's Story

During his senior year at Biola, Ivan’s mother divorced his stepfather and fled the country with his brother. Having no relationship with his father, Ivan was left on his own, abandoned with no family or financial support. He worked to collect the money for his tuition down payment, but had no money for food or transportation.

A gift from the Parent Benevolent Fund allowed Ivan to buy groceries, toiletries and other essentials. Ivan was able to graduate from Biola and complete training to become an EMT. He plans to attend medical school to become a physician.
