Internet Service
Internet service is provided for network users to assist in the academic, educational, and research purposes of Biola University. Students, faculty, staff, and affiliates of Biola University are granted temporary access to this service while attending, employed by or visiting the university.
Biola’s Internet connectivity is provided by Verizon’s Internet Dedicated Ethernet service, which provides the La Mirada campus with a bandwidth capacity of 100 Mbits per second (Mbps). The service is distributed to other buildings on campus from the datacenter in Metzger Hall via fiber optic cables.
Network Usage Policy
All users should read and abide by the Network Usage Policy. In accordance with this policy, Websense is used to help filter inappropriate content on the Internet. Also in support of this policy, the ability to use peer-to-peer file sharing software with Internet users is prohibited for our community on the basis of potential copyright infringement and/or frivolous use.
Permitted Network Devices
Network devices are permitted based on their compliance with the Network Usage Policy. Allowed devices consist of but are not limited to computers, printers, PDAs, smart phones, and game consoles. Disallowed devices consist of but are not limited to routers, switches, hubs, and wireless access points. If you are unsure of the compliance of a network device not mentioned, please contact the IT Helpdesk for a response before connecting it to the network.
Network Traffic Shaping
Because our Internet service is a finite resource shared by the entire Biola community, it is critical to ensure that a single user does not monopolize the connection at the expense of others. To help accomplish this, Network Services has deployed traffic shaping policies to distribute Internet access to our community. To briefly summarize what the policies mean to users, here are data rate limits for Internet access based on the time of year and user affiliation.
| Fall / Spring Semester | Summer / Interterm | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Download | Upload | Download | Upload | |
| Employee Offices | up to 1.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps |
| Residence Halls (Monday through Friday) | up to 1.0Mbps | up to 1.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps |
| Residence Halls (Saturday and Sunday) | up to 2.5Mbps | up to 1.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps |
| Classrooms & Labs | up to 1.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps |
| Secure Wireless | up to 1.0Mbps | up to 1.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps | up to 3.0Mbps |
| Guest Access | up to 256kbps | up to 128kbps | up to 256kbps | up to 128kbps |
Note: Internal network communications are not affected by these policies and data rates will be much higher.
Biola’s Internet Bandwidth History
Biola IT has seen the demand for Internet access grow steadily over the last decade and a half, and has sought out funding to increase the capacity of Biola’s access to that resource on a regular basis. Below you can see a graph highlighting the history of Biola’s Internet connection growth since first acquiring Internet access in 1994 (click on the graph to enlarge it).
