Using POP/SMTP

Biola Email Servers

Incoming/Receive Settings (POP)

Post Office Protocol (POP) is commonly used by clients like Outlook or Mail.app to receive email. Should you decide not to use the FirstClass client provided by the University, the following are the settings you will need to configure your preferred POP client to receive email.

  • Incoming Server (POP): webmail.biola.edu
  • Incoming Port: 110 (default)
  • Username: Biola ID Number
  • Password: BUBBS Password
  • Mail.app only - Authentication: Password

Outgoing/Send Settings (SMTP)

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is commonly used by clients to send email. Before applying settings for the University’s SMTP server, it is important to acknowledge its SMTP policy. If you intend to send mail primarily from an internet connection outside of Biola, it is advised you not use the following settings and instead consult the solutions provided by the SMTP policy.

  • Outgoing Server (SMTP): webmail.biola.edu
  • Outgoing Port: 25 (default)
  • Advanced - SMTP server requires authentication
  • Advanced - Username: Biola ID Number
  • Advanced - Password: BUBBS Password
  • Mail.app only - Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response

Non-Biola Email Servers

For non-Biola email servers there are some special considerations for sending mail with SMTP. See the instructions below.

Incoming/Receive Settings (POP)

There are no special settings for incoming (POP) settings for non-Biola email servers. Consult your email provider’s help information for their recommendations for POP.

Outgoing/Send Settings (SMTP) for Outlook & Entourage

To send mail from on-campus to a non-Biola outgoing (SMTP) server, you must use port 587 in your email client as described below.

  • Open Outlook or Entourage and from the Tools menu, click Account Settings, E-mail Accounts, or just Accounts depending on the version
  • Select and edit your non-Biola email account settings
  • In the SMTP server field you will see your non-Biola SMTP server (gmail.com, smtp.mac.com, etc.)
  • Click More or Advanced Settings for the outgoing server
  • Check the box for SMTP server requires authentication and check the box “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”
  • Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) Port from 25 to 587 (or 465 if your email provider recommends) – check the advanced tab if you don’t see these settings
  • For Outlook, select TLS in the “Use the following type of encrypted connection” checkbox – for Entourage select SMTP requires secure connection (SSL)

Outgoing/Send Settings (SMTP) for Apple’s Mail

  • Within Mail.app, go to Mail Preferences
  • Click on Accounts and then Account Information
  • Under Account Information look for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
  • Click on the drop down arrow and select Edit Server List…
  • Select the existing non-Biola SMTP Server
  • Check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) checkbox, and in the Server Port box enter 587 (or 465 if your email provider recommends)
  • From the Authentication drop down, select Password
  • Fill in the appropriate Username and Password for the email server. (typically the same user & pass as the POP server)
  • Click OK and then close the preferences window
