SMTP Policy

Most Biola employees and students do not use non-Biola SMTP servers to send mail and therefore are not affected by the SMTP policy:

  • Those who use the FirstClass client software are not affected.
  • Those who use Outlook, Eudora, Apple’s Mail, etc. who use a biola.edu SMTP server (webmail.biola.edu or truth.biola.edu) are not affected.
  • Those who use web browser-based email to any off-campus service are not affected.

-If you are one of the above types of users you needn’t be concerned with the SMTP policy. This policy only affects those who use email client software other than the FirstClass client software (Outlook, Entourage, Eudora, Apple’s Mail, etc.) AND send email using an off-campus SMTP server. The policy is described below.

On-campus use of non-Biola SMTP servers

  • Users of Outlook, Eudora, and Apple’s Mail who use SMTP email servers located off-campus (for example smtp.gmail.com, smtp.mac.com, etc.) are not permitted to send mail using port 25, instead they must use an alternate port -standard alternate SMTP ports are 587 (the most common) and 465. This restriction is necessary due to the proliferation of email-enabled viruses and the prevalence of spammers using hijacked computers to send spam.

Solution: Instructions to set email clients to send mail using an alternate SMTP port may be found on the POP/SMTP page. Email clients configured to send mail on a port other than 25 will continue to work when taken off-campus, so laptops need not change settings when moved off-campus.

Off-campus use of Biola SMTP servers

  • While off-campus, Biola staff, faculty, or students that wish to use webmail.biola.edu or truth.biola.edu for outgoing (SMTP) mail server are not able to do so, though staff and faculty still have the option of doing so by using the Biola VPN service.

Solution: Use your ISPs (Earthlink, SBC, Cox, etc.) outgoing (SMTP) server while off-campus. Changing SMTP servers has no effect on your “from” address.
